Relations between France and Malta in the Early Modern period

Abstract

Relations between France and Malta were mainly due to the presence of the Order of St John, thanks to the important role played by the French Langues and the French Knights, whose number grew in the Order and in the Convent from the end of the 16th century. Maritime trade was firts used by the Hospitallers for the exclusive supply of their Convent, and ythus contributed to gradually link France to Malta through its main Mediterranean port, Marseilles.
