The discipline of Colour

The propaedeutic discipline "Colour", like the other three disciplines of the VKhUTEMAS basic department, officially appeared only in 1922 and existed until the abolition of the basic department in 1929. Since the appearance of VKhUTEMAS up to 1922, the propaedeutics of colour passed a very bright and non-trivial way of development on the basis of the painting department. During the existence of the main department, the discipline had two successive stages, involving different teachers and correspondingly different approaches. Alexander Vesnin and Lyubov Popova taught colour between 1922 and the end of 1923. And literally from the beginning of 1924, several teachers at once: Konstantin Istomin, Alexander Labas, Nikolai Fyodorov, Sergei Kravkov and Gustav Klutsis, following the system introduced by the second Rector of VHUTEMAS, Vladimir Favorsky. In order to understand each stage consistently, it is necessary to understand the eventful context and the prehistory of interest in colour as an independent discipline.
